About the Artist

Who I am and why I paint
Reacting to what I see
I have lived in Texas almost my entire life. The Texas Hill Country and Gulf Coast inform my sense of aesthetics pretty strongly. I've painted in other places as well as you can see in the "Works" section, but the rocky terrain, clear streams and vistas in central Texas and the beaches, bays and inland marshes along the Gulf Coast really speak to me as a landscape painter. I've also taken on other subjects; urban scenes, still life subjects, and figures - but I'm primarily a landscape painter.
In the last few years as I have devoted more time to this, I've taken workshops with Rusty Jones, Phil Bob Borman, Bruce Peil, Colley Whisson, Tim Horn, Matt Smith, Kim English, Dan Graziano, Mark Boedges, and Brian Blood - as well as a group plein air workshop with Matt Smith, Mitch Baird, Dan Young and Skip Whitcomb in the Arizona desert. Each of these accomplished painters has influenced my work in a number of ways - many I did not count on. I have learned a variety of technical points on "how to paint" in the workshops but, more importantly, I think I have learned through the shared experiences of these artists and interactions with the students in workshops more about what "being a painter" really means. Done right and well, it's both a joy and a job to combine competence with inspiration - and you need both. For me, a good painting requires a combination of discipline and expression that strikes a balance between planned design and effective execution. I think that "planned spontaneity" is a hallmark of many of the great painters I study and admire. Their work often bears a seeming simplicity and confidence that results when complex choices are carefully made in the same way that a great musician often seems to play effortlessly. For me, that's the art of it all.

My aim is to convey a strong sense of my reaction to what I see and how it makes me feel - but I don't subscribe to any "isms" or seek to convey any kind of deep messages. I'm painting things that convey beauty to me - simple as that.
